How Long Can I Wear My Dentures?

If you’ve gotten dentures recently you’re probably very excited by what they’re able to do for you. Dentures can help you with all the things your teeth used to let you do, so it’s easy to feel like you can’t get enough of wearing them.

However, it isn’t a very good idea to keep your dentures in all the time. Here’s why that is, and when it’s recommended to take them out.

Can I Wear My Dentures All The Time?

The short answer is no, it’s not recommended to wear your dentures constantly. While you can easily wear your dentures all day without any issue, especially once you’re used to them, you will need to take them out on occasion.

For one, it’s strongly recommended not to wear your dentures to bed. This gives your gums time to rest and allows you to clean them overnight. You should also feel free to take your dentures out at any time during the day if your gums feel uncomfortable.

What If I Don’t Take them Out?

If you decide to leave your dentures in overnight, you could start to develop serious issues over time. Denture sores will get worse, especially if you have a habit of grinding your teeth at night. This in particular can also wear out your dentures, causing them to fail early.

Finally, soaking your dentures overnight is critical to keeping them clean. If you wear your dentures all night, you’re likely to develop serious infections in the mouth that will only get worse with time.

How to Maintain Your Dentures

If you want to ensure that your dentures last as long as possible, you need to maintain them well. That goes double if you find yourself wearing them all day. Of course, that starts with taking your dentures out to soak in denture cleaning solution each night.

However, you also need to clean your dentures over the course of a day. Brush them gently with a toothbrush (without toothpaste) to break up any plaque deposits. Take this opportunity to gently clean your gums as well.

Finally, see your dentist often. They’ll be able to ensure that your dentures still fit well and check for any signs of wear.
