While you will have a brief recovery ahead of you, don’t worry about missing out on the season’s festivities. You can still enjoy spending time with your loved ones by following 6 tips during your implant placement recovery.

1. Take Time to Rest

Don’t plan to attend any gatherings or travel for at least 24 hours after your placement surgery. It can take a few hours for the effects of any numbing agents or sedatives to dissipate, so you’ll need someone to drive you to and from your appointment. Your dentist will recommend resting for a day or two and limiting your activities. Skip any strenuous exercise for a few days because increased blood flow can cause pain and inflammation to rise.

2. Adjust Your Travel Plans

Your dentist may prescribe pain medications and may advise you not to drive. Traveling by plane doesn’t have any major risks, but your mouth will be sore for a few days, and you may not feel like traveling. After about 1 week, you’ll feel like yourself and ready to head out of town.

3. Manage Any Pain

Take any prescribed or OTC pain relievers as recommended by your dentist. Apply a cold compress to the outside of your mouth to numb the area temporarily. It will also reduce any swelling or bruising. In 3 or 4 days, your discomfort will begin to improve.

4. Watch What You Eat

It’s important to maintain a balanced diet for a quick recovery, but you’ll have some limitations. You’ll have to stick to a liquid diet for 1-2 weeks. Be cautious with any hot liquids during the first 24 hours to prevent accidental burns. Don’t drink through a straw because it can dislodge the blood clots forming at the surgical sites. In a couple of weeks, you can introduce softer foods, like mashed potatoes, stuffing, and baked yams.

5. Drink Plenty of Water

Although you may feel less than your best, it’s important to stay hydrated to promote your recovery. Avoid any carbonated or alcoholic beverages, which can delay healing.

6. Maintain Your Oral Hygiene Routine

Your dentist will review your oral hygiene instructions before you go home. It’s important to keep your mouth clean to reduce your risk of infections. Be careful when cleaning near the implant sites.

You may feel a bit under the weather for a few days, but you’ll be back on your feet in no time. You will have one more reason to smile for the holidays by investing in the next best thing to your natural teeth.

About Dr. Barry R.
